Question Newbie DNS confusion

Good day all,
I've got a Mandrake 7.2 distro which I need to get networked. Using a router (Draytek Vigor 2200 - excellent so far) I have ISDN access working - but only if I use IP addresses. I've configured a Win2k box to use the ISPs DNS nameservers, that all works fine -- how do I do this in GNU/Linux?

So far:
o added IP of router to /etc/hosts (name vigor2200)
o route add default gw vigor2200
o ping 198.182.196.56 works fine
o ping www.linux.org gives
ping: unknown host www.linux.org

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks,
Thomas.

Try adding the IP address of your ISP's DNS servers "Primarily and secondary servers" to the Linux's "/etc/resolv.conf" file

File should look like this example:

nameserver 63.38.11.18
nameserver 63.38.17.45

Then try to ping that address you said.

or test with:
#nslookup www.linux.org

Should see
Name: www.linux.org
Address: 198.182.196.56

or

#host -t ns linux.org

or if you want to see how badly their ISP's has configured the NS server, do a zone transfer to your system with:

# host -l linux.org NS.INVLOGIC.COM

Cool

Excellent! Thanks, worked first time.

nslookup gives
[root@hyperion dom4j]# nslookup www.linux.org
Server: resolver1.svr.pol.co.uk
Address: 195.92.195.94

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.linux.org
Address: 198.182.196.56

---

host -t gives
[root@hyperion dom4j]# host -t ns linux.org
linux.org name server NS0.AITCOM.NET
linux.org name server NS.INVLOGIC.COM

---
I chickened out of testing host -l : the man page reads
>> This command should be used only if it is absolutely
necessary. <<
so I'm sticking with what I've got! Thanks again - 128k 24/7 net access from WinNT, Win2k and Linux and it all *works* - extraordinary.

Best Regards,
Thomas.

cool I don't read man pages.... "much"

It's nothing bad, the NS server just gives out more information then it should, as it's not suppose to trust anyone other then it's own DNS's servers with information exchanged when updating the zone cache.

People use this information to socially engineer organised network attacks against targets.
It also gives you a clue as to if the company have any idea what the word "network security" means.
