i need help in setting up anonymous ftp using wu-ftp.
I have the box up and running. I want anonymous users
to upload content but not able to make changes to current
uploads from other guest. When real users log in I want
all users to be able to access uploads from guest users.

Real users should have access only to their directories.

I really need some help fellows .. thanx

yeah u r right im setting up pretty much standard rights .. i have 2 questions sir maybe you or the forum can answer.

1st, how i do i create an anonymous login? Do i create login just like a standard John Doe login?
It is suggested that anonymous ftp should belong to a separate group than regular or real users ftp.

2nd question: When an anonymous user logs in and uploads a document, and the file is saved in the home/ftp/incoming directory. How do i setup all real users accounts where they can access new files from anonymous or guest users. I have an idea to use symbolic links but not really knowledgeable yet on implementing.

Thank you kindly,

Gerard

From Redhats 7.0 Anonymous FTP guide:

Anonymous FTP
Setting up anonymous FTP is simple. All you need to do is install the anonftp RPM package (which you may have already done at install time). Once it is installed, anonymous FTP will be up and running.

There are a few files you might wish to edit to configure your FTP server.

/etc/ftpaccess
This file defines most of the access control for your FTP server. Some of the things that you can do are: set up logical "groups" to control access from different sites, limit the number of simultaneous FTP connections, configure transfer logging, and much more. Read the ftpaccess man page for complete details.

/etc/ftphosts
The ftphosts file is used to allow or deny access to certain accounts from various hosts. Read the ftphosts man page for details.

/etc/ftpusers
This file lists all the users that are not allowed to FTP into your machine. For example, root is listed in /etc/ftpusers by default. That means that you cannot FTP to your machine and log in as root. This is a good security measure, but some administrators prefer to remove root from this file.

Red face

I have a grasp with general ftp setup, however i dont quite understand that in the ftpaccess file, if thats where u
setup anonymous permissions, how do put restraints on anonymous logins if a user logon is not created and anonymous is assigned to a specific group. For instance we usually assign real users account with the following:

addusers -g ftp -p password -c 'FTP user' anonymous

Now once this is created when anonymous login, any password can be entered and they should gain access right? Regardless of the fact that password has been established for anonymous.

If i can get pass this misunderstanding i will have a sound ftp site.

thanx
