we are having the same issue with RH 6.1. If you find the solution, please advise and we will do the same.
It appears we somehow have a corrupted password file. Could typing in an "esc" at a password prompt have caused this?

Every time I try to change passwords, this error appears..

pls help me... the users on my system cant change their passwords and also i cant add any users..
the other error messages when i try passwd using the root account ....
