How do you check the amount of space left on the hard drive? What about how much space a certain folder is taking up?

du will tell you how much space a file or directory is taking up. df will report the amount of space left on a partition or drive.

To elaborate on that more do a du -h and you will get your information in Gigs, Megs, and Kbytes instead of just bytes.
The H stands for "Human Readable"
