hi crashnukem, i´m not really gonna answer your question but will ask the same question: i have an acer travelmate 201 txv notebook with a 10 gb hard disk. i´m currently using win98SE on partition C: (2 GB), and also have a D: (rest) for data. both are FAT32. i have partition magic & have already asked that question in another forum; the answer (and therefore my plan) was basically that i should leave the C: and D: where they are, resize them as i wish with partition magic, and create an unformatted space on the hard disk following those two partitions. this is where mandrake should be installed, or rather, where it will install itself (i have just ordered mandrake 8.0 and want to install it as soon as i get around it...). everything else such as creating a boot, / and swap partition and choosing the file system for each of them can be done during the installation process. i´d just have to install LILO or GRUB in the mbr to handle the dual booting, then it does not matter where the partition is located where linux resides.
does that sound reasonable?
i´m asking this because somebody in this forum (forgot where) said that the boot partition for linux should be created IN FRONT of the windows partition, i.e. in the very beginning of the hard disk. that made me uncertain. any advice will be greatly appreciated!
one more thing: i suppose a lucent technologies soft modem AMR will not work under linux??? but the sound card from acer labs inc. should?! at least with kernel 2.4.n is what i read...
does anybody know the programme "endnote" by isi research soft? it´s a programme to handle scientific references and format them according to guidelines from scientific journals, in connection with ms word. is there a way to get it to run under linux? or are there programmes available under linux that can handle these tasks? this is basically the only programme that keeps me tied to ms and windows, if i could handle these tasks otherwise i might be able to one day switch to linux completely (if i manage to get it running and everything...)
thanx a million
