Well, search jobs and see who is offering! I see the most money in like C++ as of right now, and I know right now there is a $***load of money for kernel hacking as well for companies getting into Linux which mainly consists of C as well.

If you want to make a lot of money then become a lawyer or a doctor.
If you want to get stressed out working 12-15 hour days; live off of Coke and potato chips; get shiped out of town against your will, and get peanuts to do all of it, then a programmer is for you!
How about a DBA? They make good money.

I'd try Java if I were you. There are so many different opportunities right now. J2EE and J2Me are going to be around for a while, so the future looks good as well.

Talking

But actually don't bet on just one horse, Java and C++ will teach you more than enough about programming principles and if you really get them you can (or should be able to ) virtually program in any language....

I myself learned Pascal at school and after that had a 5 day course in Delphi, now I'm a Progress and Java programmer mostly, C++ is the thing I would like to master, the basics I get, but its the mem-pointers that keep me still far away from it all

So my advice to obtain the big money is sell yourself as someone who can do anything.... (like a prostitute, the ones that make the real money just don't say NO )

As with any other profession, the more you know, then the more money you'll be paid. You want to make buttloads of money? Make yourself as marketable as possible to any company that may decide to hire you. Major companies tend to shy away from people that only know one thing, in favor of people that know how to do many things. Reason for this? Would you rather hire a person that knew only, for instance, Linux and then hire another that know only Windows, paying each of them plenty of money, or hire one person that knew both and pay him about 75% of what you would pay 2 separate people?

I don't know about how it is in your area, but in Dallas the paper always has ad's for C++ and Java. Anything else would be added incentives for your potential employer.

Doesn't it really have to do with what you can do with the languages, ie concepts involved. Once you learn some of these you can apply them to any language. i am a comp sci major who just got finished with my junior year. i can say a know (have used and have expierence with many languages (c, c++, java, perl, php, .....) but knowing other concepts like graphics, networking, OS, good cgi seem to be way more important than just know "teach your self programing in XXXX in 24 hours".

Don't concentrate on one language, its not going to get you far. I would recoment trying to master C++ and Java and learn at least basics for Perl, and other languages, that way if language dies you'll be able to adjust fast and won't loose your job.

:P
