Thanks for the help in getting kernel 2.4.0 working. The question wasn't posted here, but I had made a personal reference to you about not being able to boot it. Within no time you sent me email which solved the problem.
The system was locking up before it actually loaded the hard drive partitions. The problem had been the Rrocessor type and features. When it defaulted to Pentium Clase, I thought this was what it had detected and was generic for computers above 486. I didn't look into that category to see what else was available. It turns out the my AMD K6 was listed and works.
It immediately booted up, but the network devices didn't work. This was because the modutils had to be upgraded also. There were parameters passed from the make file that the current 2.2.x didn't recognize. Upgraded to 2.3.x fixed this problem.
It might be my imagination for having something upgraded, but the system seems to operate faster.
I'll let you know if something appears to be broken in this kernel version.
