Your question could spark a "distro war" type of discussion , so I'll just suggest this:
you can install both, try each one for a while, and then decide which you like better.
Good advice to go with both on the install and see what features of each distro you like and make a decision on what is best for you. What I like is ir-relevant.
I think GNOME is faster than KDE.
I have Cyrix MII 300 and 64MB RAM and I think GNOME gives you a better performance .
But the functionality of KDE is better.
I guess it is a tradeoff between functionality and speed

Used Gnome since Redhat v6.2. I have just recently switched from Gnome on RHv7.1 to KDE on Redhat v7.1
I didn't know that GNOME was causing it... but some Xwindows and application lockups have ceased since switching. So... at least for me.. KDE is more stable than GNOME. I think I will stick with KDE.
Started out with KDE, then I noticed I was using GNOME more often and lately I still use GNOME first off.. but I really like KDE 2.0 or later... ever since I got it. So I guess I am in my own delimna on which one I want to use.
I recently upgraded to KDE 2.1.1 and I love it. It seems to be a little demanding on system resources but it has a lot of functionality. It makes for a real nice looking desktop.
But I agree with everyone else, everyone should try both.
