I finally was able to upgrade my kernel from 2.2.14-5.0 to 2.2.17-14. Everything seems fine except the RPM manager. It is telling me that all my installed RPM's are not installed (including the new 2.2.17-14 kernel) and everytime I try to install a rpm I get the following error:

Preparing.... Segmentation fault (core dumped)

And I come back to the command prompt. RPM was working before I installed the new kernel because I used to to verify my existing kernel before I installed the new one. The thing that really bothers me is that I can load Linux with my old kernel and rpm still does not work. Can anybody help me????

Is there a way I can reinstall RPM or rebuild it from the source??? I tried reinstalling it from the rpm and got the same segmentation fault core dumped error. Should I try to uninstall it (not exactly sure how)??? (If I did that, how would I reinstall it via rpm's????) Has anyone else run into this problem????

Here is the latest error message I get when trying to install, upgrade, verify, query, or do anything in rpm:

error: cannot open Depends index using db1 - Invalid Argument (22)
Segmentation Fault (core dumped)

DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS???????

On the other hand, does anybody know how I can remove and reinstall the rpm manager without using rpm??? Source files, maybe???

Would compiling a new kernel cause any problems? Does it have a chance of fixing this?

Seems sad that no one's responded to your e-mails, but apparently you have everyone stumped.

I don't know exactly what would have caused the problem either, but in this situation I think I'd remove the rpm package (#rpm -e rpm), download the source, compile it, and then install it.

Also, make sure all dependencies are taken care of too. If you upgraded your kernel using an rpm, then it might have an unsatisfied dependency that is causing your problems. And that dependency may not be just with the rpm package that you have installed.

Thanx for the advice, but it wouldn't ket me erase any packages either (including rpm)........... ;-( Anyway, I already started over and reinstalled Linux so thanks for trying to help me out!!!!
