kppp hangs up straight after connection...

I`ve just downloaded the RPM for the LT Winmodem 5.99 driver for Mandrake 8.0 (using the right version for my kernel version).

Everything dials out ok in kppp, but when I get to user verification stage, kppp hangs up and gives me an error 16. How do I fix this and connect to the net properly?

My ISP details are correct as far as I can see.

Have you tried any other dial out software or configured any others to test your dial out?
That way you can test if its just Kppp or your modem itself or even your ISP giving that error.

trickeykid - it turns out I was using the wrong authentication method - it is meant to be CHAP, and I was using PAP.
