Yesterday my computer failed to load windows using LILO. When Linux booted fine I assumed it was something to do with LILO itself. However, when I used my Win98 bootdisk and tried to load windows that way I was presented with the Blue screen of death, saying that vFat(windows filesystem) was not working!

You can imagine my horror. You soon realise how dependant you are on the OS functioning properly so you can access important data. Whats more, windows is the only way I can access the internet at home (I'm at college at the mo).

I now have to wait for the win98 cd I borrowed (why should I pay for it!) so I can re-install it.

Compare this to Linux:

1).Always loads up
2).If I need to re-install (never have) I can, from my free CD
3).If I have a problem, you think I would phone up Mickeysoft support!?
4).I can obtain info for Linux questions easily from the web, with direct links, instead of navigating the maze of Mr Gates website.

As soon as I get pppd working in Linux, I will finish with Win98 for good.

Sorry I had to get that off my chest.

just a thought...

Well... I just can't shut up on this...

Linux still has one major lack comparing to Winblows...
ease of Installation and de-installation of programs. It is a big thing (at least i think so) for a "normal" user. Allthough in RedHat and others you do have this neat package system (BIG thumbs-up for that!) I burned my temper few days ago when i tried to install free-civ. got it installed and got the server running but can't connect from civclient to the game. I think i have to check the whole process again if i made some mistake.

But afterall, i won't go back to win-hell again. Welcome one new Linux-user!

Talking

You made me chuckle when I read your post. I would agree with you and say that installing a new game or program in windows is easy, especially for new comers.

However, as for installing windows itself I am not sure that it is perfect. I have just heard from my friend that he bought winME last night, despite my protests (okay, I paid £10 as well so he could make me a copy, only for comparison).

He came into college this morning and said that he had some serious install problems, namely that his mouse wasn't detected, nor his sound card. Both of them were old items (ISA card, serial, but just were not detected. In his own words he said it wasn't stable for his system. Linux on the other hand found it correctly and everything works just fine in that OS.

Now, this isn't to say windows is the root of all evil, but that I think Mr Gates has targeted newer computers because his software cannot run on old systems.

Whatever the reasons for using Linux, mine are basically that I find Linux easier to use and configure for my needs, and that I can depend on Linux to be reliable and stable.

You don't think I'm saying too much?

you definitely aren't saying too much.

as for the installation of windows itself, who even can think that when installing an OS you have to restart your pc mroe than 4-5 times?? now why is that??

one of my reasons that i started to use linux was that i got tired to boot win every day when using it. Microsoft really should focus on creating a OS that is reliable, it is (for now) most common officeOS at the moment. it is soo hard to think that they just build new progs and ignore the thing that their OS is more than unreliable. it's horrific.

oh! BTW have u seen that new microshaft add for germans? there is four penguins and three of them are mutated, while the add says that "open OS does not have only good sides" BWAHAHAH... christ! they are making themselves fools now that they start to fight openly against the biggest competitor on the market. i must admit that they will dig their own grave by this. now linux will gain even more publicity!

the thing that win does not run on old pc's is that intel and microshaft are in alliance. have u noticed that everytime on significant increase of prosessingpower, there suddenly comes brand new win or some new prog that does not work faster, it has just more junk on it that it looks more "cooler" like WinME?

"we have just released new servicepack for blahblah and it contains more that 3000 bugfixes"??? didn't have time to fix them BEFORE the releasing of the blahblah??

for the first time, THANX to MICROSOFT (giggles...)

Well, I am now able to use the internet on windows at home now, after installing winME (and wiping my hard drive!!!, not funny). I must say that it is graphically better than its ancestors, but I still dont like the idea of having to restart the computer every 10 mins or so after installing a new piece of software, just like you said.

Its not bad for £10, mind you I wouldn't pay £40 for it, especially after using something like gnome, which is free and graphically quite decent. Here's to Linux, and all its open sourceness!
