Can VNC be used to remotely view and work with a windows partition on the same computer as a linux installation? I know VMware can do this job but VNC is free! If anybody can help let me know thanks in advance

vnc

Do you mean like access files on the windows partition on a linux vncserver

yes this can be done.

You need to mount this partition and then use vnc to log on and access it in the mounted folder just like any other files on the system.

VNC is like working on the server so almost anything you can do on the server you can do on it remotely.

Your client operating system still captures some Modifier key strokes, so you can't do everything exactly the same way as being there.

If you are talking about something else, repost what it is, Someone here should be able to help.

Specify client system.

thanks for the reply, I have a Creative Digital Audio Player for MP3s and stuff. The only problem is that it refuses to work with Linux. I read a magazine article last week where the guy used VNC to remotely open a windows desktop on his Linux system. By doing this he could run the Creative MP3 transfer software in a remote windows environment while logged into Linux. In this article, the guy had one Windows computer on a linux network and used VNC to log in across the network. VMware can host an operating system but I was hoping to try a free solution first. Could VNC be used to open a virtual windows desktop from a windows partition on a dual boot system. Its not an ideal solution but any help you could provide would be great.

VNC is remote control software, like PCAnywhere. It simply gets you display services. It is not a virtual machine that will let you execute a windows program under linux, if that is what you are trying to do.

You might try looking at Wine instead: http://www.winehq.com/

wine

That's what it sounds like to me.

You would install wine on the linux system, setup the program to run on wine in linux. This may work or not depends on the program, worth a try.

Then for the remote part, use vnc to run your program in linux using wine, from the windows machine.

Another question, why not put it on the windows machine.
