Question Oracle 8.1.7

I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 on Linux 7.1 but it always hangs while trying to open the Oracle Universal Installer. I think it has something to do with the JRE (which comes with the Oracle distribution) but I'm at a loss. Has anyone managed to get these 2 to work together, and if so how??

Thanks for your help

ok... a few questions: is the installer hanging while it's trying to install oracle or the jre? are you installing from X or from the command prompt? are you getting any error messages at all, or is it just hanging?

also, what kind of installer is it? the vast majority of linux progs are rpms or tarballs... there aren't many self-installation packages out there (mainly because, if there's a problem with the installation program, it's almost impossible to fix)

Oracle has standardized on a java based installer. In terms of it hanging, I'm not sure what to suggest, other than to seek help from Oracle.

More info

Thanks for your help but I think I've almost got it sorted out. I found a very useful site with step by step instuctions. I'm still getting a linking error that is not mentioned there but I'll take a look at the makefiles and see if I can figure it out.

Here's the link if anybody else is interrested

HI

Hi everybody.
I'm having the same exact problem trying to install oracle8i 8.1.6 on RedHat 7.2. The Oracle Installer just will not come up when I issue ./runInstaller. I just get the message saying Java Virtual Machine being initialized...please wait... and then nothing happens. Not even an error message. I also think its a problem with the display setting but dont know how to fix it. I tried going to the thomasfly.com site but the link seems to be bad. I would really appreciate any help i can get on this.

Toneman
