Ok , I got a problem. I am a total newbie to Linux , I just downloaded PhatLinux and set it up. I got the KDE GUI going but I can't seem to figure out how to set a network up. I looked in all these how-tos but none of them tells me just how to do it . The other computers on my network are running windows.

I might be missing something in your question. You said you downloaded and installed the OS, and have KDE running. If KDE is running, it would appear the OS is setup.
Can you specify more directly what you're having problems with or immeidately trying to do?

Glad you got it going. I reread your question and see that I made a mistake. You had specified what you needed. You wanted to setup your network. I misread it to say you were trying to set it up, the Linux.

By the way, I downloaded the Phat program and installed it on one of my machines to see what you might have been talking about. This is the first time I've considered seeing Linux on a DOS machine. I was surprised at the ease that it started, just by clicking on an item in Windows.

It's good that you have your network setup. It didn't configure my network card by default, and it didn't have to source to try to compile it in. If you need special drivers compiled in you might have to pickup the source to the kernel at some time. You can upgrade the kernel from http://www.kernel.org. Again, it's good you have your network setup. That's one of the most important things needed for having access to all the resources available.

I need to setup my Ethernet Card. Thats my problem.

Are you saying you need to, or needed to. I thought it was fixed.

You may have to grab the kernel to compile in support for your network card. This is something that I saw I was going to have to do for the test environment I had setup.

You'll have to download the source from the address I gave you above, then use the make command to set the configuration options.

You can either user make menuconfig or make xconfig since you're using X.

Of course, the people at Phat might already have a resolution for you and the source tree. I didn't read all their help options.

If you have more than one hard drive in your computer you can download the source to the other hard drive, then mount that partition when you get to the Linux side to bring over the source for compiling it.
