Does anybody have any tips on how to clean the screen of my monitor. After many dirty fingers (innocent!), and some bug squashing, my screen could do with a bit of a clean. Any ideas?

I use a cloth and any squirty polish I can find. Glass cleaner is good, and the old housewives favourite of a bit of vinegar would be fine.
Alternatively pop out to PC world and buy some expensive screen wipes (or use car windscreen wipes).

I have never cleaned my monitor screen before, and after my attempts to clean a DVD lens, which ended with the DVD drive in 14 different pieces, I have been unable to attempt to clean my screen. I was only worried about what damage I could to the thing, as they are expensive, even for a student with my credit rating

I have always used glass cleaner.. but some folks swear you need to use special cleaner made for monitors as the Windex and what not will harm your screen.

I don't have anyway to know if that is true or not however.

You can certainly use windex on newer moniters;it's the old monitors that you couldn't clean,something about damaging the screen-can't really remember. Best solution is a 1:2 solution of amonia and warm water and a drop of soap

Damn, I guess I was a lucky Bast@#$d way back in the day when I use to spray that windex, and use it to clean everything on my desk. Never had it mess up anything.

the good old days when your monitor came in 3 choice colors-
white,amber, or green.......

Screen area: water and newpaper

Exterior: got to be a little harsh, use Jiff and a cloth

Internal: use a vacumn cleaner on those tiny air vend

Use a nice, cool, damp cloth Even better, use a moist towlette. They make your monitor smell like lemons

Thats a very good question you have their. The people at linuxquestions.net always like to get these kinds of questions once in a while. You asked if anyone knows how to clean your computer monitor, which I am assuming that you have a normal CRT monitor and not a LCD. In this case, these monitors are made from a relatively old substance but still widely used today called glass. Cleaning glass can be a very difficult task for someone that has never done something like this, as in your case. The various dirt particles, and bug corpses that have somehow risen and fallen onto themselves from the palm of your hand/and or fingers. Don't get to discouraged though, cleaning glass (as in your monitor case) IS DEFINITELY possible. It all goes back to the days when people found out that not cleaning and keeping proper hygeine could become a potential problem/and or a virus. When saying a virus I don't mean the common computer one that so many windows users share. Actually living speicies that need a host to live on is a real life virus. The glass that you want to clean, probably in your house, definitly has some virii lurking around on it, (especially if you haven't ever cleaned it)!. Anyhow, I am going to walk you through the steps completely on how you would carry out something of this such. First, I hope that you have some way to get to a store and or another persons how to use a chemical to clean your glass monitor with. Today, people usually use cars, but the traditional legs that all homosapians are accompianed with will work just fine. Next, besure to carry some sort of funds with you so that you can purchase cleaning materials if needed. Humans get this kind of element from working for a company or owning your own. This second option of the last sentence is probably the better one so you have no way of being fscked over.

i like to use butter.. nice warm melted butter... gravy will work too, i will use either chicken or beef gravy... some salt, pepper, and some bread... i like to dip the bread in it and then eat it...

If you can still see your monitor after all that . . .

. . . isopropyl alcohol is what is used in clean rooms and during the manufacturing process.

BTW doesn't the SuSE handbook have a whole lot of stuff about what colour your computer should be etc so its must be core Linux stuff
