I have a Rockwell 56k PCI internal modem. Is it compatible with Linux? If not what would be a decent cheap modem that would be compatible??

I had the same problem before. I went out and bought an ISA modem, which, of course, is an internal modem. The one i recommend is the Modem Blaster D15601-1 by Creative. Make sure that you go into the BIOS (this is key!!) and disable the OS Plug-n-Play Option. Yes, if you use Win98 or something like it then it wont hurt that os either. Most decent BIOS's have this option.

Try to make allyour hardware internal...this can save headaches unless you prefer external (no flame, please :-)).

Once you have the modem installed and detected, your best bet is to get a program called WvDial that runs with ppp and makes regular modem dialup and connect run like a champ, by cracky... Give it a whirl! Good Luck!

Good luck trying to get your Rockwell to work. Chances are it's a softmodem, which really isn't a modem at all. Don't even bother with it.

Get an external serial modem... make sure it's a real modem (do they even make external softmodems?). Externals are the easiest to set up and it's really cool to watch those blinking lights.

This is a little off topic but what would be a decent price for an external hardware modem? I've seen 'em for about $70 on pricewatch. I know they have cheaper ones but I wanna make sure it is flashable to V.92 when it comes out
