I just installed RH 7.1 and I can not login remotely, either by telnet or FTP. I keep getting Connection refused as the error message. I have removed the ipchains and iptables from the startup scripts, and the hosts.deny is empty. What am I missing? Thanks.
Almost, but not quite there. The xinetd.conf file in the /etc directory needed configured to allow telnet. Tlenet is working now, but I am still not able to ftp to the server. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you getting 'connection refused' or just nothing?
Do you have an ftp service installed? (wu-ftpd, proftpd...)
Okay, I finally got the xinetd.conf file in /etc configured for both telnet and ftp, but now all I get is Login Incorrect whenever I try to connect using ftp. The syslog shows the following:
PAM-listfile: Refused user rfriend for service ftp
Any idea what I am missing? I checked the password and the login and everthing seems correct.
Configuring the xinetd.conf file in /etc for both Telnet and FTP traffic was the fix. However only accounts created after enabling these services will work for FTP. Accounts created prior to that still get connection refused errors. Go figure. Anyway I deleted older accounts and created new ones (be sure to remove all references in groups and passwd files) and they work now. Thanks for all your help.
