sorry for sending that question again but now it's a little bit more detailed.here it is:RH 7 can't load X from the command line and shows the following.i had a look at the log file and i saw that;at the beginning everything is (II),Ok but here comes the trouble.at the end it shows:
(II)LoadingModule:"v41"
(WW)Warning,coulden't open v41
(II)UnloadModule v41
(EE)Failed to load v41(does not exist,0)
then it loads modules for the mouse,for the vcard and suddenly:
(EE)No devices detected
and it finishes followed by 'no screens found'
what does that mean?
my video card is GeForce 2MX,but Xconfigurator recognizes the monitor.as far as the vcard is concerned an error(problem) is found during the testing besides Xconfig can't probe it and i manually show it.by the way before the installation the vcard is determined as GeForce with DDR
probably i can't use my vcard determined as other(sounds silly but you know what i mean,i can't lie it that it is DDR and it's not)
i visited xfree and i saw that version 4.0.3 supports my vcard but i have no idea how to use that(i have problems installing the system and they want me to change something in the system)
i even tried RH 6.2 but it won't work at all(it's older i know but...)
what shall i do?
This is why I chose Mandrake 7.2 after having the same problem with Redhat 7.0. Neither version has the truly correct driver for a Geforce2 MX bundled with it, however mandrake 7.2 at least will give you at least give you a desktop. If you want to do any gaming though you'll need to install the drivers for linux from Nvidia's driver page and redo your xconfiguration. So on either version you need to install the correct drivers, it's just that Mandrake gives you a GUI right off the bat so you can download the drivers.
Or you can get the latest xfree86 from http://www.xfree86.org , and they do have ftp site if your unable to get into X to download from http, you can ftp without X of course.
I too have the same configuration RH7.0 & nvidia GeForce2 MX.
I get the same messages in my /var/log/XFree86.0.log file.
I complains of not being able to find/load module v41.
I did a search of the whole system and sure enough, that
module is not in the installation.
What is it? What is it for? What does it do?
Why does the X system want/need it?
I did go to nvidia site and downloaded the appropriate
driver and GLlib stuff from them. I did eventually get
an Xsession going. It doesn't look a good as I was expecting. The RedHat logo and stuff that shows up initially looked aliased and grainy. But the Gnome desktop is usable.
I want to know under what section to put the "Option"
statement contolling which version of the AGP driver
to use mentioned in nvidia's Readme. They don't give the full details - only what the line should look like, not where to put it in XFree86.conf (I think that was the name of the file). They say that you should try the one that comes with XFree86 and also the one that comes with the nvidia download.

i tried to install rh 7 on an ancient compaq and i ran into the same problem...what i had to do was simply buy a newer video card and bamm! it worked fine except that it would only work with 256 colors and a 640 x 480 resolution! :-( which, is pretty useless unless you plan on using it for programming and such...
I've tried for the past three days to get into http://www.xfree86.org and the site won't come up.
Does anyone know why it's down, or am I the only
poor soul who can't reach it?
Has anyone discovered what module "v41" is and
what it's purpose in life is? RH 7.0 has it
to be loaded in it's script, but it is nowhere
to be found on the system!
I'd still appreciate it if someone who knows
about my earlier post, about where to put the
"Option" statement for either nvidia's or Xfree's
AGP module's use.
As for getting a newer video card, I just bought this
one! A Hercules Prophet II GeForce2 MX card is not
exactly ancient technology - just difficult to get
running under Linux technology! Works great under
Windoze.
Still in need of more help,

You might be the only poor soul who can't reach it, I seem to get there with no problems that is to the http://www.xfree86.org site. Have you tried trace route to it? Most likely the way your being routed or whatever.

i tried an hour or two ago and their ftp site is down.
go to swallow.sunsite.org.uk (its a british ftp)
in the Mirrors section there is a mirror of the xfree site in the ftp.xfree86.org directory. all the things you need are there.

P.S. you will need the drivers from nvidia to use your card properly. the drivers in xfree just either utilise the svga drivers (which wirk fine) or the framebuffer device which is supported for the nvidia cards.
I ran into the same problem when I very first installed Linux. I had an Asus GeForce II MX. The version of XFree you are using most likly does NOT support it, as it does differ significatly enough from the GTS as to make it Nonfunctinal in X.....
The easiest way to fix it is to upgrade to XFree 4.0.3. You can get it from the mirror site that was mentioned above, or you can check out one of the mirror sites. Here is a cut-n-paste from their website on mirrors.

The option for the AGP driver goes in the same area as the Video Card driver selection itself..... I myself don't use it as the way the NVIDIA reference drivers work, it automatically selects the most viable option and so far that has worked for me......

I'm having trouble getting my network up on RH 7.0 too.
I'm in the process of downloading RH 7.1 as I write this.
I read somewhere that there are things wrong in some
library or other in 7.0, so I've decided to dump it.
I've got LILO trouble too. So maybe a whole new install
may get me out of several binds - I HOPE!
All this mess I've gotten into started because my old
motherboard died, and I bought a Abit KT7A board, which
I figured I might as well get a more current video card
to go in that shiny new AGP slot on there.
I had a nice tame RH 6.2 running on the old motherboard.
Now I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever get things back
to "normal."
