I'm having a problem closing ports. I _think_ the only remaining open ports are remnants from rpc services, but I'm not sure. Running nmap reveals only one open undesired port, 1024. Running rpcinfo reveals 1024 also. lsof and netstat, however, say nothing is using this port. Previously, I had a port (761?) open, that I manually killed, despite the fact I could not determine which service was using it. Does anyone know of anything that would keep 1024 open indefinately? And how do I permanently disable rpc/nfs on startup on a debian system?

To see what program is using the port type "netstat -anvp --inet" as root. In debian the startup scripts are in /etc/rc(runlevel).d, so you would probably want to remove rpc/nfs from the /etc/rc3.d directory.
