Its not really an unasnwered post though, more like an announcement from 5 years ago..
And yes, there still is free email available. To clarify some of the features listed, POP access costs money from the provider that hosts the free email. Remember, if you sign up for this, Jeremy or LQ.org does not benefit from you paying for any of the services they may offer. Just a thought for those that might be interested but the email is reliable, I've used it myself and still do occasionally.

Just to be clear - I get the webmail for free and that covers that. If I *also* want pop access, *then* I have to pay and no part of that payment benefits LQ, but just the provider. Right?
And, just as another note, does this service spam me trying to get me to sign up and pay for pop, or is that something I'd actually have to solicit? Because it sounds very cool (dunno how I didn't pay attention to it before), but almost always TANSTAAFL.

You are correct. Any service you buy from them, is not directly going to LQ.org. I think Jeremy and LQ only make some money from ads.. but he'd have to clarify that. But its certainly not a big moneymaker to help support the site itself.

No spam from the provider. Just lots of ads, which I will admit are getting more annoying lately. Too many flash type ads flashing around, making me dizzy.
I've been begging Jeremy to try and bring the free email in house but lack of resources and money are preventing that.

Cheers.
Okay, sounds reasonable. I'm surfing with w3m a lot lately because I haven't gotten X on my little experimental system yet, so I'm thoroughly defended against flash ads. (With reports of pop-up blocking failing these days, I'm tempted to stick with it.) I understand about the money/resources, though it would be cool to do that. Thanks for clearing things up for me.
-- Of course, I'm even slower with w3m and vim than I was with mozilla. Missed your post - so you haven't had anything getting through your pop-up blocker? Me either (on mozilla), but I read on /. that the ad people were sneaking through. Or around or over.
I have problems signing in. I suppose I should use the same username/password I use for LQ, but I tried and it gives me this "Invalid Login Name or Password" message. Am I missing something here?
OK, I'll do that but then what does it means LQ offers free web based email accounts? what's the point, to offer it freely just like yahoo, operamail, hotmail? I thought it was a service for members. Not that it bothers me, I am just not clear what the point is.

Well, as you notice the post is almost 5 years old. With Gmail and the like now, I wouldn't likely have done this now. The original point was to be able to offer a free @linuxquestions.net address. At some point, this may go away to be honest, since it's 1) not something we have any level of control over and 2) Gmail is better than anything we'd be able to offer. I'm not sure having @linuxquestions.net is really compelling enough to be worthwhile. Thoughts?
I must admit that at first I liked having a @linuxquestions.net email address. But as TK pointed out, the many flash ads which cannot be blocked by Firefx or by Adblock were really beginning to wear me down.
As it is, I'm allowing it to lapse as Gmail is a better option - and the ads are much less intrusive. In fact, the ads on Gmail are a lot more useful - on lq.net, it's mostly ads to buy emoticons.
How many e-mail accounts are we talking about? Maybe a smaller operation would be interested under the same pay-for-POP-space-and-goodies terms, but with less ads.
