i´m going to try to install linux mandrake 8.0 powerpack as dual boot w/ win98SE on my notebook shortly - if i should find a quiet lazy afternoon anytime soon (doesn´t exactly look that way though...). it´s a travelmate 201TXV with a 600 mhz celeron cpu, 64 mb ram (will upgrade to 192 mb), 10 gb hdd, toshiba dvd-rom sd-c2402, rage mobility-m agp graphics card & lucent technologies amr soft modem. AFAIK i can´t expect the modem to work, nor will i, in all likelihood, be able to make it work. other than that i´ve only found some reports on installations of linux on somewhat similar acer notebooks, but i was unable thus far to find any reports of somebody installing linux (whatever distro/version) on this very notebook.
any experiences whatsoever, anybody? any info/comment will be appreciated - i´m currently spending quite some time making myself educated about linux, but i have to consider myself an absolute newbie, and i´m not hot on computers anyway.
if i don´t hear anything, i guess i´m just gonna go ahead anyway ;o) and if i find the time, i´ll let everybody know how it works...
it sounds to me you shouldn't have any problems so far in installing except for the modem... sounds as if that one isn't gonna work. but the link above that cinnix gave is the best resource for linux on laptops.
And I quote: "Lucent AMR modems are not supported by this driver."
Good luck with the Acer - I've just installed Mandrake 9.1 onto an Acer Aspire 1315LC. So far pretty much everything is fine, no DRI, and I'm going to recompile the kernel to see if it supports CPU throttling an AMD XP-M. Ethernet card is detected, and I'm pretty sure that linuxant make a compatible modem driver.
