Now, I formated my drive and instaled 8.0 and it has begun again, Lilo is lost.

I had, once mor to : fdisk /mbr to star windows.

I have 2 hard drives, one 15Gb the other 6 Gb. the big one has win98 the small one Mandrake 8.0.
Can anyone please help me??
I found two kinds of errors in Lilo, the usual Li aned nothing else, and a new one, 01010101010101 all over the screen.

I hang arround at #lisboa in Dal.Net, so if you cant reach me here or there leave me a memoserv message, thank you for your understanding

Desperatly yours,

why can't you get lilo going? it's a piece of pie...

anyway, I had a similar thing yesterday when i reinstalled win98 on my system, which of course killed the lilo boosector. On the instaqllation cd for linux (well, for RH71 at least, i expwect mandrake can do it just as well) there's a rescue option, which mounts the existing linux partitions for you. you can then access the /etc/lilo.conf and /boot/... files somewhere (RH71 mounts them under /mnt/sysimage). You can then re-install lilo by copying the original /etc/lilo.conf file and changing the parameters in the file to the alternative mount point on the system (files such as /boot/message etc...)

Configure teh lilo.conf file properly, with the dual boot in place (i guess windows should be booted as /dev/hda1 and linux and /dev/hdbX .

and don't forget when making changes to run lilo from the command to make the changes take effect.
Code:
# /sbin/lilo

As I undstood this you never got it working, except for once.
This last install is a new fresh install, correct?
If so post your /etc/fstab file along with partition info on your harddisks.
Use fdisk -l this gives a list of your drives and partitions on them.

Are you booting linux with floppy now?
Then you shouldn't have to worry about the rescue disk mentioned earlier.

lilo.conf

This is lilo.conf :

boot=/dev/hdd
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=windows
keytable=/boot/pt-latin1.klt
lba32
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.3-20mdk
label=linux
root=/dev/hdd1
vga=ask
read-only
other=/dev/hda1
label=windows
table=/dev/hda
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux-0
root=/dev/hdd1
read-only

I now nothing about this.

As soon as I can I will send the other stuff you asked me for.

Thanks for your help

Is this correct?
Windows is located on primary master ide on your motherboard.
Linux is on an ide-controller attached to your pci-bus.

Right!

That is correct, Linux is on the slave drive of my secondary IDE controler, the only problem is that I don't have a master drive on this secondary IDE controler, I just changed the jumpers, that were totaly wrong, in the drive, so that it becomes hdc, and not hdd.

I tried to load Linux with loadlin, and almost managed, but it starts qindows instead, :\

Well, never mind, tonight, I'll be reinstaling Linux, RedHat 7.1 this time, with, I expect the drives properly set up, by the way, Linux does not start now, because hdd became hdc, ( you can't imagine how much I had to study to find out the disk was not correctly set up ). One other thing, Loadlin asks where I have the root file, hd and partition, is there a comand to find the file, I bought a great book of linux commands, I 'll post the name later, I thing it's a must have for all like me.

Thank's

At last the morning comes :)

Ladies and Gentleman,

At last I got it right.

Last night, after a lot of fuss and swearing, I finally managed to get it all together and working perfectly.

For one my second hard drive was installed as slave in an IDE controler that had no other drive - that was solved by changing the jumpers.

For second I found that out when I read the information on a certain book I bought the other day, that has 400 pages of commands and what they do and how to use them.

I was amazed to find that the current hd was hdd1, so it had to be all wrong.

I changed the jumpers and booted from a rescue floppy as usual, and then.... I got Kernel Panic yeahhhh!!!!!

I now instaled redhat 7.1, lilo works, sound does not because its an onboard sound device but the rest is ok.

My advise:

Read all you can, and then even after that, read some more.

Thank you all for your time and simpaty, if I can ever help... I will!!!!!!!

you can email me, or irc on dalnet, #lisboa is my channel, nickname pipas_
thanks, bye
