Cool Modem says busy all the time

I finally got Linux on the computer with no problems, but the internet dialer says modem busy all the time. Is this the sign of a winmodem. I have a Compaq 4880, Pen II 400 mhz 128 ram 12gb hard dr. Any advice? Thanks for the help.

we can't say its a winmodem clearly because of that!

what kind of modem is it? did you install or did it come with your compaq?

have you checked out www.linmodems.org or other sites to tell if it is or not?

Let us know. and if it is a winmodem, there might be a slight chance it still works though.

OK, if it's original Compaq equip, it's a winmodem, of a particularily nasty type, and will NEVER work in Linux, no matter what drivers you try for it.
Even if it has Rockwell chips, or Lucent, it's actually BUILT by Comcrap, and just won't work. It's so proprietary, it won't even work in any other system. It wll ONLY work in THAT model, with Compaq's drivers.
I'll eat my hat if anyone can find a Linux driver for THAT modem, and successfully get it working.
The original poster did not specify any 3rd party modem, thus my assumption.
