linux startup question

This is my other 'problem'. I am using RH7.1 and everything is running great. I really like having 'supertext' mode for the raw console. What I have to do is wait until it is ready to boot and at the

boot:

prompt, I hit CTRL+X to get rid of that ugly graphic and manually type in

linux vga=791

which gives me the supertext screen I love so much.

So my question is two fold :

1. How can I get rid of the very first startup graphic at the boot prompt? I am not talking about gnome or even X, but the very first one that looks like it is 320*200, has a .png of red hat logo and only says 'linux' and 'HIT CTRL+X for text mode login'.

2. How do I add vga=791 so it starts automatically without me typing it in? I remember doing it under RH6 but I forget how. And YES I read the bootparm how to. heh.

Thanks again guys and gals!

You should be able to solve this one by adding the following line to /etc/lilo.conf
Code:
append = "vga=791"
and then running lilo from the command prompt to reinstall LILO to make the change actually happen.

Dunno about the graphic bit, I'm not a Redhat man.

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt

you should see something like this in your lilo.conf, i am not at my linux box right now, but i think if you remove the map=/boot/map, taht should just have a normal terminal login instead of the graphical.

but you should be able to just leave that as it is and make your changes with the append = "vga=791", and that should do what you want without having to do a control-x to manually type it each time.

Don't remove the map=/boot/map line. Linux needs that line to tell it where things are. I don't know exactly what line it is, but it probably has something to do with a line that has the word ' message ' in it. If you find a line with word ' message ' in it, you could try commenting the line out and rerunning /sbin/lilo to see if the graphic goes away.

Well, the correct answer to remove the semi annoying graphic at the very startup is to remove the line

message=

It now only goes to the default :

LILO:

text prompt, so thankyou.

I tried adding the line append = "vga=791" in various spots in lilo.conf and running /sbin/lilo but it will not do it. I still have to manually type in

linux vga=791

at the LILO prompt to get my beloved supertext....am I missing the obvious?

I don't thing you need to use the append option. I am pretty sure that if you enter

vga=791

in your /etc/lilo.conf file it should work.

I had this set up before by putting vga=ask into lilo.conf and then picking mode 4. Once I decided that I liked option 4, I just entered vga=4 into lilo.conf and it worked great.

You would think that I would have the rudimentary intelligence to have tried that. At any rate that is the answer I was looking for, works like a charm. Thankyou!
