alright im almost done with my first kernel upgrade. i have everything with the kernel itself done(i hope!). the problem is that im not quite sure of the process to update lilo for the new kernel. ive read several tuts but for some reason im still not clear. heres the questions.
in boot, i have my old kernel file vmlinuz-2.2.17 but i need to get the file for my new kernel in there.. ive already updated the system.map and the bzimage files, but the question is where do i get the vmlinuz-2.4.3, my kernel is in usr/src.. if someone could lay out the steps(or point me to another tut or website) to get that other vmlinuz file and also how to have the option in lilo to boot from the old kernel if neccessary. that would be nice! hey, thanks for any help!

well, you don;t need a vmlinuz thingy, that;s just a name that distributions call the kernel file. the bzImage that you have is what replaces the vmlinuz thing. just put it in the same directory and then copy the section in /etc/lilo.conf that refers to the vmlinuz file (obviously changing the vmlinuz bit to the bzImage). also change the label= bit to read label=newkernel. type this at the lilo prompt when you start the computer to get your new kernel up and running. when you're satisfied with it (it hasn;t screwed things up) then swap the old vmlinuz section in /etc/lilo.conf with the new bit you made (so the new bit comes first). this will make it the default and so will be loaded automatically if ou do nowt at start up.
thats great webtoe! ok so the bzImage file is the same type of file as my old vmlinuz-2.2.17 file. right they are both ?kernel images? so i could even rename the bzImage file that i copied into the /boot dir, to something like kernel-2.4.3. then i just have to update the lilo.conf to point the new menu option to the new image in the /boot. i think i got it!
(correct anything thats wrong)
