You need to configure X, it seems as if it didn't properly configure, run this at the command Xconfigurator.
This should take you thru the steps of getting X to working condition.

Post question....

You did'nt mention HOW you logged in at the prompt. Before you mess with xconfigurator, try typing startx at the prompt.
If x is misconfigured the x server will crash and you'll just have to reboot.I dunno what'l happen if it's just not there at all-Either way the system will tell you.

Okay I was enlightened after reading your post again. If you chose at install to start Linux at the graphical login, then when you boot, and at lilo type this, Linux 1
This will put you in single user mode and then you can edit X there. If that not the case and it does it when you type startx or anything, just login as root and edit X.
