getting redhat 7.0 online

ok i have a 3com ethernet card in my new desktop. How do i get redhat to recognise it and then, how do i configure it? im using @home.

well ive never configured a 3com, but i have a linksys. First thing to do is to get the updated gcc from redhat, you cant do anything before you do that. Then get the drivers for your card, compile them (instructions should be on the disk with the drivers). then type insmod (module name) after you compile the drivers. then go into linuxconf and just comfigure your card under eth0. Make sure your using DHCP and the enabled box is ticked. good luck!

Another good resource is the ethernet HowTo at http://www.linuxdoc.org. Also with at home, it is just as easy to use a static IP as well as DHCP since I know that @home gives most of its customers a Static IP of choice.

I have a 3COM NIC card, and I didnt have to install it, in linux. It done it auto. when I installed Red Hat 7.0 & 7.1

If your card is supported by the kernel you are running, if will be recognized by the 'netconfig' utility. Just run 'netconfig' and it should detect and allow you to set up your card.

If your card is not supported by the kernel you are running, you will have recompile the current or a newer kernel with specific support and THEN run 'netconfig' to configure it.
