I have just reinstalled Linux and now I get the following error whenever I try to start XWindows:

execve fails for etc/X11/X (errno 2)
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

This has never happened before. I was able to get XWindows working BEFORE I reinstalled Linux and I have not made any system or BIOS changes since the reinstall. I don't know why this suddenly started happening. Any ideas?

This could be a few things, but a few quick questions should help narrow it down.
- What distribution are you using?
- What version of X?
- Did you change the hostname during the upgrade?

Thumbs up

I have Red Hat 6.2 and I am unsure of what version of X I am using... I did not change the hostname but I did find a way to solve the problem. I reinstalled Linux and chose not to "Skip X Configuration" this time. It worked. For some reason if you choose to "Skip X Configuration" in the GUI setup of Red Hat, regardless if you run "xf86config" after the install or not, you will get that error when you try to load X. That's what I was doing. Any idea why that little check would make a difference? Thanks for your help anyway!

It could be a myriad different things - gotta love GUI install/config utilites. A FEW things that could have gone wrong -
- It didn't put the X libraries in /etc/ld.so.conf
- It didn't configure X to accept connections from
localhost/your hostname
- I didn't even create the XF86Config file

The list goes on and on Glad you fot it working though. What do you think of Red Hat 6.2? (Follow up's should probably go in the disto forum).
