Question ipchains: Incompatable with this kernel

I am trying to use ipchains with RH7.1 however I get an this error.

[root]# ipchains -V
ipchains 1.3.10, 1-Sep-2000
[root]# ipchains -L
ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel

Do I have to recompile the kernel with settings that allow for ipchains to work? If ipchains are incompatable what the hell is it using now?

Any Ideas?
Pete.

You need to have support for IP Firewalling in your kernel to use IPchains. Also if you're using a 2.4 kernel they you'll want to use IPTables not IPChains - although this will still require the firewalling support.

2.4 kernel

Jamie
I think you can compile with IP chains support still. It was in the config stuff when I last compiled. Clearly Tables should be better, but anyone witha well sorted chains policy should be able to continue using it.

The kernel option will effect both Ipchains and IPtables - they're just interfaces to the Kernel's firewalling functions. Hence IPChains will still work, but as you said IPTables offer much better control.

cheers
