If you are learning Linux, I suggest compiling and installing your software yourself. This will give you more control over how your software is installed and your system is organized. This is especially important if you aspire to running servers
Download the current tar file of Apache and do the following:
1. Save the apache tar file into /usr/local/src
2. cd into /usr/local/src and unzip with following:
tar -xvzf <apache file name>
3. cd into new directory created in /usr/local/src
4. cd into /usr/local/<apache directory>/src
5. Run following command: ./configure
6. Run following command: make
7. Run following command: make install
Apache should now be installed with SWAT capabilities.
On my Mandrake box, all I now needed to do was type following in web browser:
http://localhost.localdomain
If this doesnt work, check to make sure apache is running and start with following command if it is not:
cd /usr/local/<apache>/bin ./apachectl start
I dont like using rpm's.
They tend to scatter files all over the system and make admin more troublesome.
Good luck....
