How do you search for a file from the command prompt?

I'd use

find / -name fileName

using 'whereis' will only find files that are in your path, however have the time this is what you want to do anyway!

I like this:

as root type 'updatedb' ( I have mine cron'd to go every couple of hours)

then as a user you can type 'locate filename'

To search for programs you what they do but can't remember their name, run (as root) makewhatis.
Now the computer make a database containing descriptions for froms it finds.
Try whatis netscape or apropos mail.
Checkout man whatis and man apropos for more info.
