My computer hangs when I run sndconfig.
I have just installed Red Hat 6.1 and I can't hear anything. My CD ROM player does work (I can see minutes going up).

Are you running in X or not? You could try to run within the command line and not in X if your doing so. See if that helps.

cdplayer has nothing to do with it and I guess neither does sndconfig.
What soundcard do you have? Everything depends on that.
If your soundcard is not supported by linux ( possible cause of sndconfig's hangup )

You might want to check http://www.alsa-project.org for 'unsupported' cards' drivers. I had a gigantic proble configuring my CF4280 and I found a driver there.
