Exclamation Am dual booting RH7 & Win2K.Need Help!

I just got my new 1.7GB computer today. It has 1024MB RAM and 60GB Hard Drive. I already have Win2KPro preinstalled on a 10GB partition. ideally, I want 10 GB for Win and 50GB for RH. I don't know what my partitions are called, so how do I start!?!

take a look at www.littlewhitedog.com, under "reviews" youŽll find instructions for setting up dual booting using the win2k bootloader.
good luck

I already saw that page...thanks anyway.
But that is for Mandrake and I'm using Redhat...there must be some difference.

Anyway, I'll keep trying!

Unhappy

I found the Red Hat 7 Installation manual, but I don't know whether I should choose "workstation installation" from the CD or use their "partitionless installation" or use their advice to look at the Linux+NT-Loader HOWTO and boot from a disk. Right now, I have the RH7 CD & a boot disk. I don't know which one to choose, cause I'm dual booting Win2K and RH! (like I said before in all my threads and replys )

Any help appreciated!

Be CAREFUL

Be very careful, friend.

I did not read the installation manuals properly when I installed RH 7.1 with Win2k, and while Linux is running fine, I lost all my data and Win2k.

Since you're installing with win2k, you'll need to avoid overwriting the MBR, and as per the Red HAt Installation Manual, in this case you should use a boot disk.

Lastly, you should choose the custom installation, since the others will overwrite the partitions according to their requirements (in my case, it was the server class).

Take care.

Also, when I'm using Disk Druid on RH7, what mount point should I give my original partition?

You need to specify only two mount points;

One for the swap file. Make it about the same
size as your system ram.
For the other use the / mount point and
make it as big as you feel you want to.
60Gigs is one whole lotta space.

You do this all within Disk Druid or fdisk.
DD is the most intuitive.

Your W2K partition should be hda1 as it
was set first. That will be your MBR and
you will have to boot Linux from floppy.
You can find a few diffrent utilities to
allow you to boot Linux from W2K.

Thanks!

I have been switching between installation types for the past few hours. I've actually somehow managed to do what you said. Right now, I'm at:

hda1 10001M NTFS/HPFS
/boot hda2 23M Linux Native
<Swap> hda5 1027M Swap
/ hda6 47590M(rest) Native

Actually, for the Swap part, in one of my "installation adventures"
I used 2049M as Swap size. My RAM is 1024MB. A friend of mine has half that RAM and used 1027M for swap...so should I use 2049 or 1027...I don't know, it's a mystery!

Right now, I'm waiting for my computer to finish the "Formating"
part of installation. I have no clue how long it will take! When doing Workstation inst., after 3hrs. I still got nowhere!

Anyway, any suggestions or explanations are welcome. Afterall, I don't have much to do....

Cool

Well Thats easy.

You have to make the linux, partitions, the Boot. root and Swap partitions, since you have 1.GB of memory they said that you would need 2 GIB of swap depending of your kernel, you could do an swap file of 2 gig.

The only problem that you could have when you are installing linux with Windows preinstalled is, that you have to install the lilo in the Boot partition or it was in the root partition? I'm sure that is in the boot partition, do not install lilo in the MBR, or you will screw up your computer and you have to reinstall W2k.

When you have all installed you can mount the NTFS partitions, you can read, but you can write.

I hope not o reply to late.

Ps:

Don't be a W.U.L

See ya.

You were.

Anyway, luckily, I was still in that dratted "Formatting\filesystem" stage, so I just pressed the big power button and shut it off. Now I am reinstalling using Custom Installation. Unfortuanately, I am in that dratted "Formatting\filesystem" stage again!

Does anyone have any idea how long the formatting will take?

I don't wan't to stay here all night!!!

Any suggestions, explanations, caffeine will be appreciated!
Oh...and you might want to hurry, cause I might just get sick of it all and load everything tomorrow or never!

Question

It never takes too much time formatting the linux partitions, even the EXT2 it not takes too much time. I have formated 32 gig in a raid systems and it takes like 1 min. Do you have made a too big partition? when it get Dratted? when you are formating which partition? Swap? root? and what is the size? Try to make diferent paritions like one for USR, OPT,etc. Does your motherboard supports the 60gib? do you have formatted all the harddrive before, or this is the first time that you are using all the hard drive capacity?

I'm online until 7:00 pm EST I will wait for your reply.

To answer your questions:

Quote:

These are my partitions:

hda1 10001M NTFS/HPFS
/boot hda2 23M Linux Native
<Swap> hda5 2047M Swap
/ hda6 46571M(rest) Native

Talking to other Linux people, I don't think my partitions are too big.

The formatting of partit. should be done all at once, except the hda1, cause it was already there w/ Win2K. I'm pretty sure my ASUS board supports 60GB. As for hard drive formatting, I'm not sure. To my knowledge, this is the first time anybody used all the 60GB on this computer.

Also, what do you mean by:
Try to make diferent paritions like one for USR, OPT,etc.

Look forward to your reply!

Anybody have a clue what the >hell< is going on?
(Excuse my language, but I'm really frustrated!!!)

Any help appreciated...honest!

Thumbs up

Ok the partitions looks good, It wasn't the first idea trying to have a dual boot? Why do you want to format the hda1? there is windows 2k, there. If you want the dual boot, just mount the partition you dont have to format it. The partitions are ok. They are not very big, but they are going to take you too much time when you have to made an force check under Ext2.

Also you have the boot partition under the 1024 cylinder. I don't know if RH 7 still has this restriction. so you will have problems trying to boot.

I hope that harddrive is in good shape, but if the problem is with the HDA1 Im sure that your harddrive is ok.

Making different partitions will make your management of space better. For example, if you are going to install an database, like oracle it always install in the opt so you could have a partition for opt. But any way having the root partition will all the rest of the space is ok.

Just ignore or mount the HDA1, DO NOT FORMAT IT. if you want the dual boot of course.
