Audio Problems

I am running KDE on RH7.1. I am having a lot of trouble configuring my soundcard. It is an ESS 1869 it's on DMA3 and IRQ5. ESS 1868 is supported, but I am having trouble with 1869. The odd thing is that I can play CDs and control volume, balance,etc. with the KSound Mixer. Can not play system sounds or anything off the web. Real Player says the device is in use -no other apps are running.
/dev/snd is not in the root tree even after trying (apparently in vain) to compile/install ALSA drivers. They seemed to install, but no joy. After install, I ran modprobe and it couldn't find it. cat /proc didn't show the driver runing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

check the /etc/modules.conf file. make sure that all the different aliases for your sound are set to the correct driver. it sounds like a few of them aren't set or defined.

This is from /etc/modules.conf:
alias eth0 8139too
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias sound-slot-0 sb
post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
options sound dmabuf=1
alias synth0 opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma=1
Doesn't look anything like it should. If I edit this, can it affect anything else?

*Update* Got it working. The problem was the KDE Sound Server was starting on boot. Had to disable it in Preferences/Sound. Just in case anyone has the same problem.
