Unhappy Kernel Compile - OK, Modules - Not

Running SuSE 7.0:

I had this same problem when I tried to compile 2.4.0 also. I just gave up then and went back the 2.2.16. Now wanted a new kernel.

I did all the right things. Untar, make xconfig, make dep, make clean, make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install and copied the system.map and vmlinuz to the /boot directory.

I ran lilo and added the new kernel and boot with out a problem on the kernel end, but depmod and modprobe don't seem to find _any_ modules.

I found that /lib/modules/2.4.1/modules.dep was empty, I don't know why. So I tried to copy /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/lib/.depend over top of it and it didn't seem to work, in fact it didn't.

I checked to make sure that I had modules enabled in my .config also. This had to be enabled since I remember enabling modules for my soundcard and netcard, etc.

Alas, I cannot seem to figure this out.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom? Anything will help I'm sure...I hope :-)

Thanks!

-Kevin

Did you make sure to upgrade modutils? You will need atleast version 2.4.0 to use the 2.4.x kernels. Here is a full list of things to check.

Code:
o Gnu C 2.91.66 # gcc --version
o Gnu make 3.77 # make --version
o binutils 2.9.1.0.25 # ld -v
o util-linux 2.10o # fdformat --version
o modutils 2.4.0 # insmod -V
o e2fsprogs 1.19 # tune2fs --version
o pcmcia-cs 3.1.21 # cardmgr -V
o PPP 2.4.0 # pppd --version
o isdn4k-utils 3.1pre1 # isdnctrl 2>&1|grep version

hmm, I guess I didn't check any of that. This is the first time I've built a Kernel.

Thanks for your help, I'll make sure to post the results.

Ok, I need to update util-linux, e2fsprogs, pcmcia-cs, and ppp. They're all pretty close to the version I need, but I'll try anything to get it working.

Oh, my isdnctrl is 3.1pre1a, is that the newest one?

Well, I recompiled last night and now I can load modules! I still see errors, but that's because the init scripts are looking for older modules, that I didn't build, or are named something else.

Now I get to fix the errors, but at least I can successfully use modprobe again!

Thanks for the help!
