Angry executable files/music software

I have been trying to download some music software for multitrack recording - there are lots of things I can buy in the windows/Mac format but I am trying to switch over to linux - anyway I downloaded some rpm files and after I finally found them, I cannot open them - They have a "gear" symbol beside them. I thought that in Mandrake that that was an executable file.
A) How do I install/open
B)Does anyone know of any reliable multitrack/midi software for linux that a dummy like me can install and operate (Hopefully compareable to cakewalk cuz thats what im used to)
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

if the rpm's have the executable bit on, then they're going to appear as the kde gears... just disable the executable bits and then they should appear as normal rpms

Actually, I didn,t explain myself very well... I installed the rpm files, then after I found where the rpm manager placed the installed program they appeared as executable files, but when I click on them nothing happens

cd to the dir where the program lives and you remember that executable? do this:

./filename

if it doesnt work it should at least give you some output to give you a clue what is wrong.
