Unhappy spontaneous system-reboot when working with X-environment

Software environment: Linux release RedHat 7.1

System: Dell PowerEdge model 2200 with dual Intel Pentium II 233 MHz Processor
Video: On-board VGA controller Ati Mach 64 (264VT)
DataControl (1): On-board Wide-SCSI controller chip Adaptec AIC7880
DataControl(2): PCI Ultra/Wide controller board Adaptec AHA2940U/UW
DataControl(3): On-board floppy controller
Disk(1): Wide-SCSI Seagate ST34572W (4Gb) on DataControl(1)
Disk(2): Wide-SCSI Seagate ST34572W (4Gb) on DataControl(1)
Disk(3) SCSI NEC CD-rom:464 on DataControl(2)
Disk(4) Floppy drive 3.5inch 1.44Mb on DataControl(3)
Media(1): Sony DAT dds-3 SDT9000 on DataControl(2)
Lan: Intel EtherExpress Pro/100 TX PCI
Input(1): 101 Key keyboard US-International (configured as if with deadkeys)
Input(2): MS IntelliMouse with ThumbWheel (configured as IntelliMouse PS/2)
Monitor: NEC MS FE750

Description:

After standard installation as Workstation with X-environment all goes well,
although sometimes the installation procedure does not finish nicely, so manual
reboot/reset needed to boot into Linux.
After booting into Linux X-environment/server the loginscreen appears (whether
with Gnome/KDE/Xfree desktop); when logon as root the spontaneous reboot occurs
almost directly at typing in the second alphabetical sign of the password.
When logon as a regular user the logon sequence runs properly most of the times
(sometimes the reboot at the same instance as the root logon) and X-desktop appears;
moving around seems to run okay until moving around a window or going into the
choice to look at the LiLo settings (sometimes directly when trying to open the "Expert"
-Tab) - when reboot did not take place, logging out of the desktop login almost certainly
causes a system reboot.
Note: this is NOT a shutdown with reboot, but a HARD system reboot, causing
disrupted filesystems, since they have not been properly shut down!
I tried many things, like installation as a server without KDE or Gnome and X-environment
absence at all, which seems to run okay as long as I stay in runlevel 3 - moving to runlevel
5 by modifying the "initdefault" setting or by hand causes the problems as aforementioned.
Also upgraded Flash-BIOS to highest revision level (A07) and tried setting changes of all
kinds, but that resulted mainly in significant slow-down of system performance (even tried
to disable the memory cache ....) - everything failed. I even tried (please forgive me, but a
desperate person can do funny things) installation MS Win NT4.0 server, which went all
well without ANY problem, so I think the problem is not in the hardware, but most likely
in the software. Even with my background knowledge of several Unix versions like
BOS-UX(Bull Unix), SCO-Unix, XENIX, ESIX, SINIX, MINIX, Digital Unix, Interactive Unix,
AT&T Unix and HP-UX, I could not think of a workable solution for this problem.

Assistance:

Has anyone encountered similar problems and how can this be solved, since I would like
to belong to the group of interested and positive Linux users.

Response:

Please give your solution directions to my email address "c.klarenbeek@hccnet.nl".
Thank you in advance for your attention and effort to help me.

Maybe your computer is too hot. It happens. Open up your box and check to make sure the fans work properly.
