glut compile probs

this isn't at all urgent, but i can't find any good way around a compile problem i've been having with the glut 3.7 demos i downloaded a few days ago.

during "make", the compiler returns a error something like :

sourcefile.c : error - function "random" already defined in stdlib ...ect

and, when i checked out the source, there was already

...
#undef random
long random(void);
...

so, the compiler should have undefined the function, but didn't. has anyone else seen this, or know of a compiler or linker problem that would cause this?

i got this to work by just getting rid of the new random function, but i would really like to know why the undef wasn't working.
