Dear All
I got a guide book (MGrawHill)for linux.
There was the REd Hat 6.1. distribution inside.
I followed the guide and I installed the linux.
In the book it was written that after the installation it was necessary to configure the kerner.
In the console from root mode I typed :
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

The message sent back was :
No rule to make target config.stop
I tried also
cd /usr/src/linux
make xconfig
THe message back was the same only xconfig changed.
Now I don-t know what to do.
I searched in the REd Hat site in the How To section and there was written that it was at this point to unpack the source so I tried >
cd /usr/src
tar zxpvf linux-2.2.12.tar.gz
the message back was
tar (son):impossible open the archive linux-2.2.12.tar.gz:no such file or directory.
tar(son):Error is not recoverable :exiting now
tar(son):The son give back the status 2
I tried to unpack also with :
tar xpvf linux-2.2.12.tar
the reply message was :
tar:linux-2.2.12.tar :no such file or directory
tar:Error is not recoverable :exiting now.

At the end >
KDE and applications are working but the floppy , cdrom ,printer are not availables .
I tried to mount this devices but it was not possible .
Should I configure the kernel first ?

thank you very much
Best REgards
Mario Mason

The kernel comes preconfigured in most (all?) modern distributions. It is only neccessary to reconfigure/recompile if you want to change something.

If you do want to recompile you need to download the latest kernel from kernel.org.

mariomason...If every thing on your computer is working ok,then I would leave the compile untill you get familiar with the system. If you need USB support Red Hat should have some upgrades or patches you could try.For the majority of tar files you download off the web,the way to extract them is with the command tar xvzf filename.tar.gz.

you dont need configure kernel. but if you wanna try this :
download the latest kernel ,2.2.18.tar.gz from http://www.kernel.org., move to /usr/src
from terminal :
host# startx
open terminal window:
host# cd /usr/src
host# pwd
/usr/src
host# rm -R /linux
host# gunzip 2.2.18.tar.gz
host# tar -xvf 2.2.18.tar
host# cd linux
host# pwd
/usr/src/linux
host# make xconfig
(from this, you can enable/disable what kernel option you want.)
save and run this :
host# make dep ; make clean ; make bzImage
host# cd /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot
host# cd /boot
host# rm system.map
host# rm boot.map
host# cp vmlinuz vmlinuz.old
host# vi /etc/lilo.conf
edit word vmlinuz with bzImage
save then :
host# /sbin/lilo
after reboot make sure you get this :
host# uname -a
Linux 2.2.18........................
