I am having the same problem because of the version is incorrect. I have Red Hat ver. 6.1 and I tried to upgrade Xwindows to 4.0.3 successfully, and then when I tried to install to install the Nvidia drivers, it gave me an error message stating that it needed Xfree86 ver. 4.0.1.

I havenīt yet checked out for a new Nvidia driver version...

This is annoying !

Exclamation solved, sort of .....

I got the nvidia 769 drivers from their website. I got the tarball files. I then compiled them myself, and that seemed to fix everything.........

Strangely, but I upgraded XFree86 right up to 4.0.3 and the drivers seems to install on system with Xfree86 ver. 4.0.1. only.

what Xfree86 version do you have?

Thumbs up XFree

RH 7.1 came with Xfree 4.0.3 right out of the box, I didn't have to change anything....
