telnet sessions

Hi, can someone explain to me how i can start a process going in a login shell, and then logout and leave it running? I have a cute little network in my house, and a few machines all need to be able to manually start and stop a modem on a given machine, so.. telonet in a run wvdial, but of course, when that machine shuts down, the telnet session breaks, and the internet connection dies. I thought nohup was meant to help with this,. but it doesn't seem to be of any use at all.

Any other tips on getting this kind of network really simple to use (i.e. art student proof) would be VERY much appreciated!

thanks
chris

I'd recommend using mserver, its lets you have a client on each machine with a 'dial' and 'hang up' button (there are clients for Windows, *nix, Mac, etc, etc) that communicates with a little server process over your lan that simply brings the connection up or down. Also if there are multiple people using the connection the serve won't disconnect unless you force it to - handy if you're leaving a download running.

Not sure about the children bit though.

ok, i'm trying to install the mserver rpm file. it says i need rc-scripts > 2.xxx or such like to install.... this package seems to be pretty damn important, and it's not already installed by RH71. is it safe to install it anyway, even thought it will overwrite many of redhat's startup scripts? I'm 100% paranoid that if i install it it'll totally destroy redhat.

thanks

I'm getting loads of errors compiling this...

cd mserver; make
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/c-mserver-0.1.0/mserver'
gcc -c -g -O2 -Wall ipc.c
ipc.c: In function `shmem_init':
ipc.c:38: storage size of `semval' isn't known
ipc.c:48: warning: implicit declaration of function `exit'
ipc.c:38: warning: unused variable `semval'
make[1]: *** [ipc.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/c-mserver-0.1.0/mserver'
make: *** [all] Error 2

The c-mserver page doesn't seem to mention this. Did you encounter the problem?

Uhm... I build it from source with no errors at all - hence I can't be much help with the RPM version... I just stuff it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local to start it at boot time - I'm not sure where the Redhat equivilent is, but I would go overwriting your startup scripts if I were you.

I'd suggest trying a different version of the source if you are getting build errors, it was quite a while ago that I used it. Another alternative would be to setup diald so that your modem will dial itself whenever needed, but this has some issues - like you loose the first packet sent and it will drop the connection if you spend ages read a web page, and you can get 3 day phone calls when you DNS goes screwy (I know all about this one).

cheers

Jamie...
