Recently I used Yast, suse's setup tool, for unistalling some packages. When I was done with Yast and it finsished running configuration, the prompt \root@prodigious/hseritt@prodigious> (because I was in superuser mode) appeared and i typed "exit." This, of course, took me back to hseritt@prodigious>. A few minutes later i decided to go back to superuser for some minute admin task and typed "su" at the prompt in order to do that.
Well, when i did that nothing happened...i tried to got another console with -alt F2 and i got a login prompt but when i tried to login as root or anything else the same thing happened: no return at the prompt. This happened on all the virtual consoles. Finally, I just had to manually reboot.
Also, frequently, when i manually reboot nothing happens. I have to power down and wait about a minute and then try again and sometimes nothing happens...no monitor response or input detection i.e. keyboard, or maouse.
How are you manually rebooting? If your just hitting the reset button on your PC that can be a problem.
You always want to use a shutdown command or ctrl-alt-del when rebooting or shutting down a Linux system.
i totally agree...yu should reboot with the comd line...yada yada yada...however, im referring to the problem of having yur system freeze so that yu cant even use yur input devices i.e. mouse, keyboard, trackball etc.
why would yur system fail to detect yur monitor and input devices?
It could be anything man, hardware related or operator error! What are you usually doing when it freezes? How often does it do it? What programs are running? Have you tried eliminating programs running that don't need to be running?
There are a million quesitons involved in a computer system freezing or not detecting hardware at bootup, most of the time that I see it is hardware related in any OS I have worked with.
well, now...ive tried installing a different type of kernal..thank God SuSE will let you do that...i know some distos dont seem to give you the option without compiling it yurself...so far uptime is 30 hrs...a new record for "prodigius". keeping my fingers crossed...
to answer yur question tricky...it would happen 75% of the time wheneveer i used yahoo chat or geocities "web page builder" which of course is powered by yahoo... at those time i really just suspect a problem with netscape. i got desperate and started just using 8 (256) bit colors (yuck!) but i knew my card was easily capable of 16 because i used it forever with win98 and it hardly ever caused a crash.
now, im forever weaned off ms products and i figure my back is to the wall and it MUST work...
