Question htaccess confusion!

hi all!
i got a question about htaccess...recently my lecturer had asked me to set up htaccess authentication for one of the folder in the server 'student'....i did...but when i tried to access that folder via netscape, i got 2 login windows...the first one says:

Welcome to MRTG at student :
Login:
Password:

and the second pop-up:

Welcome to MRTG at student.example.edu.my:
Login:
Password:

my question is: why 2 windows? I protected only one folder in 'student' server, that is the MRTG file...i did htaccess before but i saw only one window...my lecturer asked about this and wanted an explanation....can somebody help, please?THANKS!

did you password protect the folder that had your .htpasswd file in it? I personally have never seen two windows pop up.
I'm thinking the original dir is protected then maybe when your
trying to authenticate it has to dig into the other folder (test folder) to authenticate it asks again?

Are the files in the same Dir? if so I'm sorry I dunno...

Are they in separate dirs? if so is there another .htaccess file in the dir with the .htpasswd file? if so rename the .htaccess file that is not supposed to be used.

my .htaccess files look "something" like this:

AuthName "domain Login"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /path/to/web/.htpasswd
require valid-user
DirectoryIndex index.php

And my .htpasswd files look "something" like this:

username:EnCryPtedPass

and they are both in the same Dir.

Hope this helps,
rewt.
