Hope this is the right forum. Here's my problem:

I have just installed RedHat 7.0 on a Pentium 200 MMX workstation. I cannot get it to recognize my NIC (3Com 3C509B-TPO).

I have already disabled PnP on the card and configured the I/O and IRQ via 3Com's config utility. I have also disabled PnP in the machine's BIOS. I have tried two different 3C509B-TPO cards with a variety of I/O and IRQs, in two different ISA slots, but no luck yet. There are no other cards on the PC other than the video card.

I have used the dmesg to see if the card was detected, but there are no eth entries in the file. I am new to Linux, so I thought maybe I was forgetting something? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Try this append command in lilo. Change the irq and address to fit your needs. Also if you have a 10BaseT leave the '4' there if you have coax then it needs to be changed. You can find the necessary values if you look at the 3c509 driver source code. If you have only one card then omit the seconde ether= directive.

Code:
append = "ether=11,0x300,4,0x3c509,eth0 ether=10,0x280,4,0x3c509,eth1"
Hope this helps

Thanks for the help Gary. I changed the /etc/lilo.conf per your recommendation and issued the /sbin/lilo command. Unfortunately, its still not recognizing the card.

Rebuild the Linux kernel with the 3c509 support built in.

Thanks again. I'll try that (as soon as i figure out how to rebuild a kernel :-). BTW I tried two other 100Base-T PCI NICs I have and both were detected w/out a problem. I'd just as soon use those, but now I'm determined to get these 3Com cards working.

Ok. I've rebuilt the kernel with 3c509 support with no luck. I tried adding the entry <append="eth=10,0x300,eth0> to lilo.conf. No luck.

I've also tried using the 3c509 support as a loadable module and modified the modules.conf file. No luck.

Again, I have disabled pnp on the card and checked that the irq/io are set to 10/0x300 using the 3com utilities. I have disabled pnp in the system bios and made sure that irq 10 was set for legacy/isa.

I have checked the ioports and irqs used by the system to make sure nothing is in confict. I have reinstalled Linux. Still no luck.

Any other ideas?

I'm sorry to hear of the troubles that you are having. I like the 3c509 cards because they have been easy installs under Linux (not to mention that I get 'em free from work). You have tried everything that I did to make the cards work. Do you have a bad card? Has it worked under another OS?
You mentioned that you do have another card for the box. There comes a time while trying to solve any computer problem when you just have to say f it.

I haven't totally given up hope yet. While I have tried multiple cards in multiple slots with multiple Linux loads and multiple configurations, I have not tried multiple PCs. Furtunately, here at work I have about 15 old machines that I can try to get working. If not, I can always use one of the 10/100 PCI cards that I know will work. In the mean time, I have learned quite a lot so far, which is really what this exercise is all about anyway. I do appreciate your insight as it has at the very least provided me with a direction on which to focus my trouble-shooting.
