I've added the line '/sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 some_ip_address' to the end of the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file to set up a subinterface on my ethernet card for virtual hosting. Because this file is read everytime the system starts, the subinterface get started everytime. My problem is that for some reason it stops every once in a while (like once a week but not regularly). When I run the ifconfig command eth0 will be there and eth0:0 will not, so I have to re-execute the command. Does anyone know what I can do (besides writing and scheduling some kind of script) to assure that this subinterface will stay up, or at least what log files I can look at to see what's happening?
Any info would help, thanks.

Not sure why it would hang. I've never named one eth0:0, but rather eth0:1. But I can't imagine why this would be. However, my suggestion is that if you're only using this for virtual hosting, you should take a look at name-based virtual hosting rather than ip-based virtual hosting. Depending on how many sites your going to host, it can really save IP addresses.

Also, what type of NIC are youo using?

I prefer name based virtual hosting also, and use both. In this case (for whatever reason) my isp set me up with another ip address and configured their dns servers with it, so I'm kind of trying to accomodate them. Trying to get them to change something is like pulling teeth.

I have a Kingston NIC, pretty new model, not sure of the details though.

thanks.
