Hi!

what sort of anti-virus scanning software is available for linux?

Virus scanners is definitely one of the areas that Linux is still lacking in. You may want to try AntiVir, which seems to be one of the better ones. I am also interested in what antivirus packages people are using. If you are using one please post your experiences.
